Online Appraisal

D. I have an incredibly rare all clad/coreless 66 roosevelt dime in excellent condition . I think it may be 1 of a kind.I can't find any examples of this type error ,except one ,and it did not weigh, this one does. There is no visible copper along the rim.

Asked on May 21, 2021

I am going to re-answer this question, at least for the benefit of our viewers, because the asker was less than grateful for my first reply.

I would not jump to the conclusion this coin is rare in any way. It's not uncommon in clad coins for the center copper layer to be uniform in color with the outer layers and not show. With the number of coins we handle every week, we see it frequently.Though it usually has a copper colored center that is distinctly reddish, there are many factors that can contribute to the color of the various parts of a coin. I explained that this coin could have toned evenly in color, and the word "tone" does not necessarily mean darken in color.

I'd like to know the mass from a really precise balance, one that is calibrated correctly and measures to a hundredth of a gram. if the coin is 90% silver it will have a mass of 2.500 g, In which case I would advise sending it out for certification.

if it is Clad, the mass will read 2.268. That is my prediction.

We have a milligram balance that measures to 1/1000th of a gram, and even an analytical one that measures to a 10000th of the gram; our office is in Hastings on Hudson, and we can, whether by mail or by personal visit, offer the services of measuring the mass or sending it out for certification.

I would like to close by saying that we were very clear in our website that we do not ordinarily answer questions about modern varieties but we are making an exception for this. And this is our professional opinion based upon experience, not one that one should take offense to, even if you were hoping for a rarer designation.

Good luck and happy hunting.
