Online Appraisal

D. I have a 1966 Kennedy silver half dollar I believe to be an error coin. I don't know what type of error coin it is and am curious to find out if it is worth anything. I provided some pictures and put another Kennedy half dollar in the picture for reference to show its not as wide and the edge is thicker. The edges do look reeded in person but I don't know if you can tell from the photo. The coin curls up on both sides and I hope you can see clearly in the pictures. The coin is dirty and I have not tried to clean it, but all the details are legible. There is a mark on the front near the ear. Please let me know what you find out.

Somebody flattened out the edge by banging it. This is not any kind of mint error. I was told bored servicemen did this by tapping spoons on coins on the ship, and these are called "tappers." Or it might be the first step in making the coin into jewelry. Regardless, it's not got much value as a coin; it has twelve bucks of silver though.

Most inquiries we get are about circulated coins made after 1971, and/or coins where people mistake post-mint damage and wear for "errors". You can expect us to affirm these are face value. We ask that before you write and submit such questions, to PLEASE first read through our existing postings and our "what it's worth" primers.
