“NEVER THIS: IT’S RARE AND WILL GO UP IN VALUE.”
“HE ONLY PRODUCED 200 OF THESE IT’S GOING FOR $4,000 ON EBAY.
~ OR CHRISTIES OR SOTHEBY’S. OR DOYLE . . .
” IT’S A TIFFANY ~ OR LALIQUE OR PICASSO OR FILL IN THE BLANK “
Grandma’s mantra.
We turn away most furniture and art. There is no market for most of it.
People want to furnish their homes with new things, or high-end pieces with a provenance.
Baseball cards from the 1980s on are generally worthless, unless you have the right rookie card. Watches and clocks might need service that costs more than they are worth. The condition pricing curve is sharp. Mickey Mantle cards certified in 9, near the top of the pyramid, might command $50,000. But if it’s been bouncing around in a shoebox with rough corners, it’s a 1 or 2 worth a couple thousand.
Dark wood furniture is out of style; many sectors of fine art have been sliding for decades. Ivory is unsaleable, swastikas boast bad karma. It’s not all bad;
Caribbean and American folk art are hot, as is colonial era and mid-century vintage furniture.
We can tell you a lot from photos!
We work with antique dealers, auctioneers, and private collectors.
If you have the right sideboard or Hudson River School painting, we will find a home for it. It’s easier to move a full estate of desirable art and antiques than one or two lithographs from a secondary artist.
What looks or sounds valuable can be deceptive; some artists rolled out many pieces (Andy Warhol had a print factory), Counterfeits and reproductions outnumber authentic pieces. The condition curve is sharp; a tattered corner, or stain can knock the value down by 70%.
